Musical Groups Perform at HUMC |
| About 200 people from the Herndon community attended
a performance by a Russian all-female junior chamber
choir at Herndon United Methodist Church Nov. 28. The
12 members of “The Singing Christians” treble choir
group, most ranging from 16 to 20 years of age, were
on a brief U.S. tour. The Herndon crowd attended the
group’s last performance before their return home to
Kurgan, Russia. |
| While the church invites members of the church and
community to attend its weekly Wednesday night dinner,
attendance is usually fairly modest. The visiting Russian
choir proved to be quite a draw, as word was received
from people attending earlier performances in the area.
The Singing Christians performed a number of Russian
spiritual pieces and many Western classics. Of particular
note was a soprano solo by 16-year-old Katya Lapshina,
who sang “Ave Maria.” |
| Choir members stayed with a number of different church
families, giving the Russians a chance to learn about
American culture. For most of the young women it was
their first visit to the United States, and they spent
their last two days in the Herndon area, going bowling
with the church youth group and doing some last-minute
shopping. |
| The church also held the second part of its “Russian
Music Mini-Series,” which featured the St. Petersburg
Men’s Ensemble Dec. 18. |
