RCA Offers an Info. Smorgasbord

Hanging a flyer for an important event on a stop sign may not be the most law abiding way to get information out to the public.
So, beginning Feb. 28, the Reston Citizen's Association will create an environment where people in Reston can have their voices heard without first wondering where to go.
It's called an "Info Sharing Smorgasbord," and Rod Koozmin, Hunters Woods Director for RCA, said what people in the community have to say is a vital part of bringing about change.
Whether it's bulletin boards, newspapers, the web or radio, RCA will hold monthly round-table discussions and discuss and catalog various ways to make sure citizens in Reston are able to convey messages to the public, which they hold at top priority.
"We just hope to hear from citizens who are trying to share information," Koozmin said. "There are a number of public issues out there that we're interested in."
In the coming months, Koozmin said one of the issues RCA will closely examine, and hope the public will participate in, is the issue of wheelchair accessibility in Reston.
Other issues, Koozmin said for public input can be anything from fund-raising for diabetes or issues on transportation.
"We're really just a group interested in the goings on in Reston," he said. "We hope it fosters communication."
Koozmin said many people in Reston may not be aware of the avenues they have readily available to reach out to the community on issues of concern, but the monthly forums will reinforce to the public, what options they have to be heard in the community.
"Some people have a hard time getting their messages out," Koozmin said. "This has great potential to let people know where they can go."
Koozmin said RCA does not plan to find new places to put bulletin boards, but rather let people know where to go to find them.
A subcommittee for RCA will be mostly in charge, Koozmin said, and people have the opportunity to find out how information is disseminated in the community and what suggestions can be made for improvement.
The first Info Sharing Smorgasbord forum will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Reston Regional Library, Room 2 at 7 p.m.
