By Sabrina Enayatulla Send Mail to Writer
Observer Staff Writer
The votes were in Tuesday for Reston Association's two At-Large Director Seat Positions and one South Lakes District Director Seat. RA incumbent President Jennifer Blackwell was re-elected to an at-large position with just over 5,000 votes and on Wednesday, RA board members re-elected Blackwell as RA president.
Blackwell's term as an at-large director was reinstated for three years and her term at president for one. Blackwell said she was excited and relieved to be re-elected given all the controversy and negative reactions over the governing documents and said she looks forward to another challenging year. Adding, that she is hoping for less meetings.
The coming year will include revising the strategic vision for the next five years, a management review of the covenants administration and long term goals for parks and recreation. Mark Watts took the second at-large position with more than 3,500 votes. At Wednesday's meeting, Watts was elected as RA board secretary.
Watts said he was happy to learn of his win but said he was confident that whomever the community chose would be the best candidate for the second at-large position.
Watts said he was pleased to know that his community placed enough trust in him to hold the position for the next three years.
Watts' area of expertise is in finance. He is a CPA at a Reston-based firm and said he is looking forward to helping RA with its long term financial planning.
Watts said he is also going to use his strengths to help RA explore the possibility of purchasing a building rather than continuing to lease the facility they currently use.
Kathleen Driscoll McKee ran for the South Lakes' seat and narrowly beat Gerald Volloy by only about 200 votes. McKee said she was surprised she won because there had been no indicators as to where each candidate stood during the election.
McKee serves on the RA Parks and Recreations committee and said she hopes to continue her work with Parks and Recreations in a different capacity. McKee said she is excited to join a board she feels is "compatible" and will continue her other volunteer work while she in on the RA board.
McKee is currently on a leave of absence from her position on Supervisor Cathy Hudgins' staff and said she will speak with Supervisor Hudgins later this week.
