Swim and Dive Team Closes Season With Win Over Mt. Vernon
The Herndon High School swim and dive team closed the season last weekend, defeating Mt. Vernon's men's and women's teams. "We were on fire tonight, with swimmers working hard to make the Region time cuts and excited about our last meet of the season," said Coach Kathy McLaughlin. The men's team won 223-91 and the women's team had their second win of the season with a score of 219-96.
In the men's 200-yard medley relay, sophomores Christian Polito, Taylor Shaw, Danny Camozzo and Brian Via took first with seniors Chris Warnock, Will Chantry, Dan Knoll and Josh Hamilton taking second. The Hornets took the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle with Ryan Williams, Brady Halleen and Michael Sagan. Via won the 200-yard individual medley and his teammate Shaw took second.
Knoll also won the 50-yard freestyle event, with sophomore Adam Schalk taking second and seniors Warnock and Nathan Hardesty taking third and fourth.
Junior Ben Carroll took second in the diving event and qualified for regions. Camozzo placed first in the 100-yard butterfly race, and senior Jonathan Lacher was third. Hornets dominated in the 100-yard freestyle with Polito taking first, Mark Rodakowski second and Schalk third. Williams won the 500-yard freestyle followed by Will Cormier and Brendan Carrick. In addition, Rodakowski, Polito, Hamilton and Camozzo won the 200-yard freestyle relay and qualified for regions. Warnock took first in the 100-yard backstroke with Dan Lear taking second and Sagan taking third. Taylor Shaw won the 100-yard breaststroke with Chantry taking second and senior Steven Bredesen taking third. The relay team of Schalk, Via, Camozzo and Polito also placed first in the 400-yard freestyle with Knoll, Hamilton, Warnock and Hardesty taking second.
The women gave great performances in the 200-yard medley relay with Molly Cudahy, Jennie Verrillo, Kat McKinstry placing first, and seniors Liz Smith, Rebecca Shaw, Deidra Jones and Katie Baroody taking second. McKinstry also won the 200-yard freestyle event, followed by Alix Bunten in second and freshman Inaje Mintz in third. Jillian Klarman took second in the 200-yard individual medley, and Alex Wauben took third. Senior Rachel Luerhs took third in the 50-yard freestyle. 
Junior Maggie Russell took second in the diving competition. The Hornets had the top three positions in the 100-yard butterfly event with freshman Robin Brazier first, Lauren Satyshur second and Bunten third. Chelsea Robinson won the 100-yard freestyle with Smith taking second and Sarah Anderson taking third. The women swept the 500-yard freestyle with Cudahy taking first, McKinstry second and Olivia Petty third. The girls took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Bunten, Anelisa Toma, Christa Gettler and Mandy Roth. Robin Brazier, Robinson, Madeline Jendezjec and Anderson took second and the team of Alex Nalewanski, Olivia Petty, Erin Rider and Jillian Klarman took third.
Smith won the 100-yard backstroke with Russell taking second and Hamilton third. The women also swept the 100-yard breaststroke with senior Jones taking first, Verrillo taking second and Wauben taking third. The team of McKinstry, Cudahy, Brazier and Robinson finished off the night winning the 400-yard freestyle relay and qualifying for regions.
