Expansion Plan Announced for Reston Hospital Center
HCA Virginia announced plans to expand and enhance the 187-bed Reston Hospital Center on Feb. 13. The hospital submitted a rezoning request for the Reston Hospital Center campus to the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning on the day of the announcement.
"Our long-term expansion plans for Reston Hospital Center have been under development for two years," said Margaret Lewis, president of HCA's Capital Division and head of HCA Virginia. "Now, in the wake of the recent Broadlands Regional Medical Center decision, we will take full advantage of the opportunity to accelerate the project's timetable."
The project will result in an additional 345,000-square-feet of space for Reston Hospital Center and add 152 new medical-surgical and obstetrical beds to the hospitals three existing patient buildings. A new six-story medical office building will also be built, in addition to 650 more parking spaces that will be added. The hospital's surgical suite and emergency department will also be expanded. If the project receives swift approvals from Fairfax County and the state the project could begin in three years.
"We're tremendously excited about these plans and look forward to working with Fairfax County on their implementation," said William Adams, president of Reston Hospital Center. "Our campus expansion will enhance the quality of life for patients, physicians and residents throughout the region and improve our ability to provide the highest-quality healthcare."
Founded in 1986, the 187-bed Reston Hopsital Center occupies a 15-acre campus. The current facility and medical office buildings are about 600,000 square feet of total space. Reston Hospital Center recently received two clinical honors from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for Magnet recognition and the BEACON Award for critical care excellence.
Earlier this month the Loudoun board of supervisors denied HCA Virginia's special exception request to construct a 164-bed hospital, which was to be named Broadlands Regional Medical Center. Once expanded Reston Hospital Center will serve many of the patients that would have otherwise sought care at the Broadland's location in the Ashburn area.
HCA Virginia has hospitals, outpatient centers and physician practices in central, southwestern and Northern Virginia. Construction is currently underway at the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, a 126-bed hospital that will be located south of Fredericksburg. Nationwide HCA owns 166 hospitals, and an additional 107 freestanding surgery centers are in 20 states as well as in London.
