| TOWN PLANS COMMUNITY DAY |
| The Town of Herndon will hold its 8th annual Community Day and Housing Fair from noon to 4 p.m. May 3 at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center, located at 1086 Elden Street in the Dulles Park Shopping Center. The event marks the beginning of Neighborhood Celebration Month in the Town, and it showcases the many programs and services available at the NRC from educational programs and computer classes to community building activities, crime prevention training, community services programs and more. A full slate of performers is scheduled throughout the afternoon to include Skip Chaple's "Guitars not Guns" performance team (noon); Betty Warner's Cloggers (12:30 p.m.); local singer Emma Bailey (1 p.m.); Neo Legend Tigers Tae Kwon Do (1:30 p.m.); multicultural dancers from Herndon High School (2 p.m.); the Boyle School's Irish step team (2:30 p.m.); Herndon Middle School's step team and urban dance team (3 p.m.); and the folk rock band Huckleberry (3:30 p.m.). A housing fair will be held in conjunction with the festivities. Information for first time homebuyers will be offered. | MONTESSORI SCHOOL TO HOST ART AUCTION |
| The Montessori School of Herndon's PTA will host an art auction gala on Saturday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, located at 432 Van Buren St. in Herndon. AJRoss Auctions of Holbrook, N.Y., will display more than 150 custom framed and matted works of art, lithographs, etchings, serigraphs, animation cells, watercolors, original oils signed by the artists and documented sports memorabilia. Most bids are between $50 to $300 and investment works also will be available. All pieces are guaranteed to be priced below retail prices and include an exclusive lifetime exchange privilege. Preview begins at 7 p.m. and the live auction will begin at 8 p.m. A silent auction of various items and services will also take place. Refreshments, wine and a variety of desserts will be served. Tickets for the gala are $15 per person or $25 for two. Ticket price includes hors d'oeuvres, wine, soda, coffee and desserts throughout the evening and door prizes. | YMCA TO HOST MOTHER'S DAY BAZAAR |
| The YMCA Fairfax County in Reston will host its first annual Mother's Day Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. At the event, "Teddy Bears Portraits" will be taking professional photos of area families and the sitting will be for free. In addition, there will be gifts available for purchase and live jazz music from noon to 3 p.m. All proceeds will go to The YMCA Building Bridges Campaign. | RA TO HOST YARD SALE FOR COMMUNITY |
| Reston Association will host a family yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The rain date is Sunday. More than 100 families will participate in the yard sale, which will feature children's clothing, toys, kitchen items and furniture, among other things. The yard sale will be held in the parking lot of the Reston Association building, located at 1930 Isaac Newton Square in Reston. | HOA TO HOLD ROAD CLEAN-UP |
| Crestbrook Homes Association is looking for community assistance to help clean-up Dranesville Road. The first clean-up will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with volunteers meeting at the corner of Dranesville Road and Powells Tavern. Surrounding communities are invited to participate. VDOT's budget only covers mowing three times a year and other maintenance is done when reported. The Fairfax Clean Council will provide bags, gloves, and vests for the clean up. | VOCE CHAMBER SINGERS TO PERFORM |
| St. Timothy's Episcopal Church presents "A Musical Tour of the British Isles," featuring the Voce Chamber Singers, at 4 p.m. Sunday. The program is the sixth installment of St. Timothy's 2007-2008 Sunday concert and service series, and Voce's concluding concert of the 2007-2008 season. Under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Nafziger, Voce's choral artists will take the audience on a musical journey from folk song to opera aria, from church music to cabaret tune, and from pop song to parlor music. As is often the case at Voce concerts, the audience will be invited to join in singing selections. | The Town of Herndon's Department of Public Works hosts its annual "Big Truck Days," an opportunity for children and their parents to see the town's big trucks and heavy equipment and learn more about their operation. Light refreshments will be served and souvenirs will be provided to children. The event will be held at the town's public works complex, located at 1479 Sterling Rd. in Herndon. | PTA TO SPONSOR 'FAIRGRADE' PRESENTATION |
| The Herndon Pyramid PTAs are sponsoring a presentation for parents by FAIRGRADE, an organization seeking to revise the current Fairfax County Public Schools grading policy. The program will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 7 in the Herndon Middle School auditorium. FAIRGRADE, comprised of a group of Fairfax County parents, is asking the School Board and staff to review the current high school grading policy. FAIRGRADE would like Fairfax County schools to convert from the current 7-point grading scale to a 10-point grading system, as well as provide added grade weighting for honors and Advanced Placement classes. The group claims that the current grading scale is putting Fairfax County students at a disadvantage in the college admissions process, scholarship determination, college athletic eligibility and car insurance rates. The Herndon Pyramid PTA is comprised of the PTAs of all schools in the Herndon High School pyramid, including the seven feeder elementary schools, Herndon Middle School and Herndon High School. Hundreds of local moms and teens will be assembling 600 wellness bags for the nonprofit "Life With Cancer" at the Tysons Corner Center from 7:30 to 9 a.m. May 8.
