Miles Harrison, 49, of Purcellville, was planning to take his son, Chase, to his day-care center on Tuesday morning, but Harrison left the 21-month-old in his GMC Yukon in the parking lot of his office at 580 Herndon Parkway. The infant was found dead Tuesday evening, and Harrison is now being charged with manslaughter in his son's death, Herndon Police Chief Toussaint Summers said Wednesday.
The child was found after someone in the parking lot noticed something unusual about the car through its tinted windows, Summers said. The Herndon police and Fairfax County fire and rescue were called to the scene at about 5 p.m. Tuesday after CPR had been performed on the non-responsive child. Summers said the boy was dead when the police arrived. He said the police do not know how long the child was left in the car.
Chase was adopted from Russia about three months ago, Summers said.
Harrison is being charged with manslaughter, which requires a jail sentence of between one and 10 years, and Summers said the investigation would continue for several weeks. Summers said the incident was a "tragic event" and an important reminder to not leave children in the car unattended.
Harrison worked in Herndon at Project Solutions Group, a real estate consulting firm, and was the managing director of the firm's relocation management division, according to the firm's Web site.
David Zorger, co-owner of Project Solutions Group, said the incident is a tragedy and he could not disclose further details because it is a "personal issue with the family."
