Time for Change in Herndon
To the editor:
"Change" is the theme throughout America this year. Now is the time to think about change for Herndon. Are we satisfied with the direction that Herndon has been going for the past couple of years?
Three developers have attempted to work with Herndon to redevelop our downtown. It has not gotten done. Promises to complete Oak and Pearl street improvements? Not done. Promises of a skate park? Not done.
Supposed support of a nature center? Not done. Promises of infrastructure improvements? Where are they? Promises to bring down costs in Herndon? Not only not done but they have increased spending a whopping $1.7 million from the general fund with no revenue to replace it to help balance their budget. A better solution for the day laborers? Not done, and they have returned to the streets.
The positive things we have seen completed in Herndon recently, such as the south Elden Street improvements, the community center renovation, the Walgreens store and the Lynn Street improvements were all initiated and planned by previous councils.
What has our council been busy accomplishing? A resolution identifying the town's official language as English only, incorporation of the federal 287(g) program for town police, membership in the Culpepper Coalition and lots of bad press for Herndon.
It's time to move Herndon forward, to make it a place that is attractive to new homeowners, businesses and visitors alike. It's time to jump on that "change" bandwagon. That's why I'm supporting Harlon Reece as the one whose experience can unify and restore pride in the town of Herndon.
